Acrylonitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR)

Nitrile rubber (NBR), is a synthetic rubber copolymer of acrylonitrile (ACN) and butadiene.

Rising ACN content improves polarity, oil resistance, fuel resistance, heat resistance, hardness and gas retention whereas elasticity, low temperature flexibility and resilience are more or less impaired.

Grades of NBR are as below:

  • Low ACN Content NBR 18-22%
  • Med ACN Content NBR 28-34%
  • High ACN Content NBR 38-42%
  • Ultra High ACN Content NBR 45-49%
  • Hydrgenated NBR (HNBR)
  • Carboxylated NBR (XNBR)

Uses: The uses of NBR include non-latex gloves for the healthcare industry, automotive transmission belts, hoses, O rings, gaskets, oil seals, V belts, synthetic leather, printer’s roller, and as cable jacketing.

HNBR, also known as HSN (highly saturated nitrile) is commonly used to manufacture o-rings for automotive air-conditioning systems.
